The purpose of the Nutrition Program is to reduce hunger and food insecurity, promote socialization and the health and well-being of persons aged 60 or older by providing assistance in gaining access to nutrition, disease prevention and health promotion services to delay the onset of adverse health conditions resulting from poor nutritional health or sedentary behavior.  The Nutrition Program provides Congregate and Home Delivered Meal Service along with nutrition education, screening and counseling in accordance with the Federal Older Americans Act.

Nutrition Program Funding

The Nutrition Program is funded by the Federal Older Americans Act, State and local funds, and participant contributions. The Older Americans Act emphasizes regard for the dignity of older persons by requiring that opportunities are provided for older persons to participate not only in the planning and administration of the Nutrition Program but also providing older persons an opportunity to voluntarily contribute toward the cost of Nutrition Program meal service. Participant donations will be used to expand meal service, maintain service level, support access services and provide outreach, nutrition education, and nutrition counseling.

Program Objectives

Prevent malnutrition and promote good health behaviors through nutrition education, screening and intervention. 

Serve safe and quality meals that adhere to state food safety and sanitation standards. 

Promote and maintain coordination with other nutrition-related and other support services for older individuals.

Target older individuals who have the greatest economic or social need with attention to low-income minority and rural older individuals.
